To conform to the conventions of the genre and fulfill the expectations of the audience I want to attract, there are a number of key elements that I must include in the fashion magazine I make for my NEA.
Defining them and making this checklist will ensure that I do not miss any crucial details that will contribute to the success of my fashion magazine.
House Style: A consistent colour scheme, fonts and overall look through individual issues and all issues by a publication will satisfy the audience’s expectations of familiarity.
Cover Lines: Summarising the most appealing features in the issue through short, interesting pieces of text down the sides of the cover draws audiences in.
Masthead: Located at the top of the cover in a font which reflects the style, tone and mode of address of the magazine helps to establish brand identity.
Captions: The photographer’s details, as well as information regarding the star/model and their look should be included to give the audience an insight and access.
Language: Direct address involves the audience and hyperbolic language emphasises the greatness of the magazine, particularly in the cover lines.
Images: Attractive stars/models feature, representing a social group and the content of the issue.
Mise en Scene: Stars/models are the focus - they are well dressed and have very natural or very stylised make up.
Colour Scheme: Used to grab the audience's attention, it is often seasonal and relates to other aspects of the issue.
Essential Information: The date, price and a barcode feature on the cover so the audience is able to purchase the magazine.
Layout: Images fill a lot of space, text is in columns with gutters between them and different shapes are used to make pages easy for the audience to navigate.
